A history in the making?

The last time any country has ever taken a new permanent seat on to the Security Council was in 1971 when the Republic of China was still known as the People's Republic of China! (The 5 current permanent members are: United Kingdom, United States, France, China and Russia). And so, I was surprised to have seen a headline in the New York Times stating exactly this, "Obama Backs India for Security Council Seat."

According to the NY Times: President Obama reasons that "India is emerging!" and that is his reason for showing his support and backing India up. Manmohan Singh, Prime minister of India, says that it is time for the United States and India to form an equal partnership with "strategic relationships." No doubt this caused a trigger of alarm for Pakistan. However, there has been no official confirmation of India joining the permanent members' circle yet and it could take a while for it to happen as there have been no agreements as to which country should be promoted onto the Security Council.
